The energy and excitement were contagious at Northtown Center on Monday evening, June 11th as several children with various disabilities took the ice in sled hockey sleds for the first time.  The Just Try It event was part of The Sled Hockey Foundation’s (SHF) partnership with Children’s Hospital, and the Stone’s Buddies program, to offer the great recreational and therapeutic sport of sled hockey to their patient community.

"This is so great – I can’t believe how wonderful this is for these kids and their families!", exclaimed Nicole Dayka, the Interim Director of the Stone’s Buddies program.

The SHF provided the sled hockey sleds, sticks, hockey helmets, gloves, and technical support.  The families just needed to get to the rink and enjoy the experience – and they most certainly did!  The kids’ smiles were ear to ear making it hard to get them off the ice when the event was over.  Several participants asked if they could play sled hockey.

"Yes, these kids can join a local team and play sled hockey in the fall when the season picks back up," stated Steve Wischmann, Acting Executive Director of the SHF. "Linking interested people to sled hockey programs is a big part of what we do at the Sled Hockey Foundation. We want to grow the sport for mobility disabled kids and adults."

The Stone’s Buddies program and the SHF are already planning another Just Try It event for later in the summer.  Make sure to keep an eye on the SHF Email Newsletter and website for announcements on upcoming events.

The SHF is asking for donations from the community as those generous investments allow the foundation to do its work to provide recreational opportunities to mobility disabled children, adults, and injured military veterans. Please donate today.
