The Sled Hockey Foundation (SHF) participated in the festive Hockey Day in Lockport event held at the Cornerstone Arena on Saturday, November 25th. This event, sponsored by Howell Motors, was very well organized and executed by Shelley Unocic, the Executive Director of Lockport Ice, her staff, and everyone who volunteered to be part of this wonderful day.
This event, meant to celebrate the great sport of hockey, was also a reminder of how spectacular the Cornerstone Arena facility is for hockey and special events. The rinks were built to be sled hockey accessible – friendly to sled players with see-through boards and easy access to the benches from the ice surface.
The SHF’s involvement included staffing an informational/promotional table, Adam Page, a two-time U.S. Paralympic Gold Medalist in sled hockey, and Lancaster native, was present to sign autographs and skate with participants. The heart of the afternoon’s events included an on-ice exhibition sled hockey game between the Buffalo Warriors sled team and Lockport High School alumni and honored guests, including the Mayor of Lockport and Adam Page. The exhibition game was well attended and offered great entertainment for those present who had never seen sled hockey before.
The SHF’s participation was aimed at raising awareness of sled hockey and the SHF and our on-going commitment to building a sled hockey program at Cornerstone Arena.
Shelley said of the great day, “Thank you to all of you! We were grateful you guys were willing to do all that you did. Everyone that we put in the sleds came off the ice loving the experience. Many asked if we could get a sled league going!”
The SHF is proud to enjoy a growing association with Cornerstone Arena/Lockport Ice. A generous grant award from the Grigg Lewis Foundation is making sled hockey programs possible in Lockport and Niagara County.
